The fur will be flying on Derby Day at Baldwin Park. Dogs of all shapes and sizes will sprint to the finish line while owners and fans cheer them on at the Fourth Annual Doggie Derby on Saturday May 7th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Profits from this year’s events will be donated to the Sebastian Haul Fund. The fund helps greyhound rescue groups meet the financial challenge of transporting greyhounds from Florida adoption groups to other groups outside of the state, where there is a better chance of them finding their “forever homes.”
“This is really a festival celebrating dogs of all kinds,” said Julie Hemphill, president of Brightside Events, the non-profit group that facilitates the Derby. “Even people who don’t own dogs enjoy it. It’s an opportunity for families to enjoy a spring day in the company of furry friends,” she said.
Anyone can register a dog here for a $15 fee. There is no admission fee for spectators. Dogs of similar size compete in 25-yard sprint heats. The single elimination, head-to-head competition is divided into heavyweight, middleweight, lightweight and featherweight divisions. Champions in each weight class receive trophies and prizes.
Spectators will enjoy live music, local cuisine, canine caricatures and photos and a performance by the Young Marine Color Guard. The Kid Zone includes a bounce house, face painting and other activities. Sponsors of the event include local pet supply stores and other businesses as well as artists. Families can shop for dog accessories while meeting scores of friendly canines and their owners.
An official pre-party, the Derby Jubilee & Auction, will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 6 at Lago, 4979 New Broad Street. The $75 admission includes a seated, multi-course gourmet dinner paired with wines, live music, dancing, silent and live auctions and a Best Derby Hat contest. Guests are encouraged to wear their best Kentucky Derby attire. Reservation information is available at the website listed above.
